This is the first part of a four part piece in which we suggest 12 films you should look for in the upcoming year. The first will have 12-10, the second 9-7, the third 6-4, and the fourth will have 3-1.
12. The Expendables
Dir. Sylvester Stallone
August 13, 2010
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I think this movie will be so bad, that it’s good. The cast stars just about every B-movie action star that has ever lived. Sylvestor Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve “Stone Cold” Austin, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Danny Trejo, UFC fighter Randy Coutre, and the Governator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger are all crammed into this movie somehow. Be careful not to slip in the testosterone as you watch the gunfire and explosions tear through bodies this August. The only thing that can really kill this protein fueled machine is it’s script and it’s seriousness. Both of which, I’m not too worried about.
11. The Social Network
Dir. David Fincher
October 1, 2010
Don’t shy away from the fact that this flick is based around the creation of Facebook; Because it is. Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland, Zombieland) stars as Mark Zuckerberg, the brainy, friendless kid who locked himself in his room and created the social networking giant that dominates most of our lives today. Don’t feel bad for the kid, he’s worth about a billion dollars. This movie won’t make nearly that much but it’ll be nice to see what Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en) does with the material. I can almost see it now: Someone clicks on a friend request and the camera zooms into the keyboard, through millions of feet of cable until it reaches the person on the other end. Nice.
10. The Last Airbender
Dir. M. Night Shyamalan
July 2, 2010
I am a firm believer that you need to hit rock bottom before you can make progress. Shyamalan is the perfect example. His 2008 train wreck The Happening showed me that there might be hope for me and my director’s chair. This time he’s back with his biggest movie yet with a little help from Nickelodeon’s best show in years. Not to be confused with the blue cat people of Pandora, this movie is based off of Avatar: The Last Airbender and is sure to rake in millions of dollars from families everywhere. It explores mystical shamans who can control fire, air and water amongst other things. The best part: It’s almost all filmed in Pennsylvania. Shyamalan needs to bring the movie industry to Philadelphia, and I believe this film will help.
Stay tuned for Part 2
