Why is Dr. Manhattan Uncircumcised?

With all the outrage going on about the Watchman, one could wonder if it is all hype or something more. Sadly, I can’t be 100% unbiased when it comes to such an evaluation because I was a fan of the book beforehand. Before we even go into analyzing the film as a seperate entity in and of itself, we must realize that there are a few factors riding against them:

  1. It’s adapted from a story that has been often stated as one of the greatest graphic novels of all time.
  2. It is a story that has something near 10 intertwining tie-ins from various character subplots.
  3. Alan Moore.
  4. No matter how faithful they are, the movie is still an adaptation. Some aspect of the storyline must be compromised  or else you alienate everyone who has ever read the never (reducing the watching redux by more than half.
  5. In it’s first weekend, it’s already in the top 200 of Imdb’s top 250 (the pen-ultimate hype machine)
  6. It’s directed by Zack Snyder.

If you take out any of these factors, than the movie could suprisingly go downhill (even the last factor). Truthfully, the film succeeds to the best of its abilities to not only adapt the storyline faithfully and make a good film. Sadly, however it loses the novel’s most potent piece: its subtext. For the sake of not making this analysis boring, I’m just going to blame Zack Snyder.

[moving on]

Watching this film brings up a lot of questions, like:

Why is half the movie in slow motion?

Whose the chick that’s playing Sally Jupiter?

Where’s about a quarter of the storyline from the book?

Why is Dr. Manhattan not circumcised? Or is he….?

And, as I sat in the front seat at my local impovrished movie theater (filled with everything from terribly developed 5 year olds that asked no questions until the sex scene in Nite Owl’s flying vehicle and teenagers looking to score while President nixon babbles about nuclear war) I realized all these questions were somewhat frivilous. I should be watching this film to enjoy it. I mean, when’s the last time you went to a film and felt like a kid? The Watchmen is the closest you’re going to get without being disappointed. Yes, it’s got blue dick. Yes, some of the storyline is gone. Yes, it’s a little long. And yes, it’s directed by Zack Snyder, but when the time comes to question the validity of this film as a credible work one should re-think the validity of the question itself.

The bottom line is: the movie is fun. It has great action sequences (except the fucking slow motion.Maybe if he’d actually used a normal fps than he could’ve added in the hour or so of cut footage), a great storyline, and (best of all) pretty pictures; as well as, an absurd amount of blue dick. Who doesn’t want that?

I just stopped by your blog and thought I would say hello. I like your site design. Looking forward to reading more down the road.

Dr. Manhattan is uncircumcised because his mom and dad were smart and decided not to mutilate their little baby boy. Seriously, though, you do realize that over 70% of the world population is uncircumcised, right? Circumcision is just a stupid practice the US and the Middle East have adopted for religious/cultural reasons. There are no real medical benefits to it, despite what Americans have been brainwashed into thinking. I know cutting off the skin of a little baby’s penis has been touted as a cure for everything from masturbation to AIDS, but the rest of the world gets on just fine with their genitalia intact and undamaged. PS– you guessed it, I’m not circumcised either. Weird, huh? Call a doctor, quick, before something bad happens to me!

Yeah, if you seriously question why someone is uncircumcised, then that just shows you’re an ignorant American. Circumcision is extremely rare in this world outside the world of Americans, Jews, and Muslims. And the guy before me is wrong, actually. More than 70% of the world is uncut. It’s more like 85% of the world is uncut. In America, it’s about 40% uncut. However, some parts of America can be about 50/50.
The PROS of foreskin completely overpower the CONS.

    I don’t have a foreskin
    and
    I don’t have AIDS
    therefore
    Foreskins cause AIDS!

    That’s just logic!

I think the question is more accurately stated, “Why isn’t the presumably Jewish Dr. Ostermann circumcised?” True, he’s not necessarily Jewish, and different people have different opinions about whether or not the Smurf wore a turtleneck, but it totally ignores the larger issue, which is why it got so much screen time in the first place!

Im uncircumcised and proud! Im tired of dealing with ignorant americans, ive lived in america all my life but my parents are both from europe. im glad some people like cobra and alex know the facts! i still continue to try to educate people i meet about why circumcision is wrong. Cobra and Alex, you guys rock!

  7. ComradeNo Gravatar says:

There’s nothing wrong with circumcision either. You are supposedly less prone to bacteria and the like.

  8. EmilyNo Gravatar says:

I personaly think you are all idiots. I mean, come on guys, a debate about the skin on your penis? It’s moronic and futhermore circumcision is a life choice you do it or you dont. So there.

I did not expect this on a Sunday. Congratulations for such a great site!. Added a subscription to your feed.

  10. It’s not a life choice if it’s forced upon you as a baby.

Emily, I personally think you are an idiot.

I guess, since you’re probably not a guy, you don’t realize how much significance that skin on our penises is
in the sense that having it (in America) often times causes ridicule.

For what reason? Exactly. It’s stupid to think that a few extra millimeters on the skin of someone’s penis would cause another to look down on you.

    The debate is only secondary.
A way to vent and let out our anger at the stupidity of the idea to cut off part of your penis, call it normal, and then turn around and reject those who choose not to inflict unnecessary pain on their children.

You guys, way to get into a debate about circumcision. Classy.

  14. JackylNo Gravatar says:

Regarding the practice, I’m not circumcised and wished more than anything that I was. America only accomodates for circumcised men, the children don’t learn about foreskin and how it has to be pulled back at a young age, as a result, children have to get it surgically pulled back when they’re teenagers. That’s what I had to do, and it still didn’t work. I should have just gotten circumcised at a young age so that I wouldn’t even remember the pain. I will never forgive my parents for leaving my foreskin. Never.

Wow this discussion has gone off topic.

Firstly, to the point of this topic, I believe that the Dr is uncircumcised since when he was “reborn” in his current form it regenerated as the “ideal”, unaltered human male body. By this I mean that he grew the foreskin that is characteristic to the male body in addition to being the ultimate physical specimen.

Secondly, as to the practice of circumcision. Sorry to hear it Jackal, but I expect you are a rare case, given that we naturally HAVE a foreskin it is unlikely that it gets as bad as your in mot cases otherwise evolution would have eliminated it OR circumcision would be recognized as necessary MEDICAL procedure and be performed on all newborns.
